Lately, these conveniently located accommodations are seeing a major resurgence and reinvestment. From revamped vintage motels to new luxury lodges, these seven boutique stays offer comfort and a unique experience in and around some of the West’s best national parks.
The Downtown Clifton, Tucson, Arizona
The vibrant city of Tucson is bookended by Saguaro National Park, allowing travelers to get the best of both worlds if they’re so inclined. Located on the edge of Barrio Viejo and in walking distance of Tucson’s core, the Downtown Clifton is a recently refreshed mid-century modern spot where guests will find unique touches such as turntables and smart TVs. Pop into the charmingly retro Red Light Lounge for a cocktail, or kick back after a day on the trails in one of the hotel’s beautifully designed outdoor spaces. Rooms start at $119 a night.
Field Station Moab, Moab, Utah
This retro-minimalist hotel opened in April 2023 in a prime location to explore both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. Comfortable rooms offer plenty of space to spread out dirty hiking gear or store a bike into the provided rack so you can sleep soundly knowing it’s safe by your side. If you're a new adventurer, staff can arrange a guided tour from a local provider: consider mountain biking and canyoneering Moab’s famous topography. Grab a cup of coffee from the cafe on site or purchase any essentials you forgot from the Gear Shop. Driving a camper van? Field Station Moab also has spots with power hookups, showers, and access to all of the other guest amenities, including the refreshing pool. EV chargers are also available. Rooms start at $127 a night in the off season, and Van Life reservations start at $29 a night.
The Bright Angel Lodge, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
A Registered National Historic Landmark, the Bright Angel Lodge at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park was designed in 1935 by renowned Southwest architect Mary E.J. Colter. It’s undergone many transformations since, but a recent remodel has left both the lodge and its cabins looking chic and inviting. There are also two restaurants and a saloon, as well as an old-fashioned soda fountain that only operates in warmer months. You can snag a double room for about $150, but you’ll have to use the shared showers. For a swankier experience, book a free-standing cabin which start at $225 a night.
The Oasis At Death Valley, Death Valley National Park, California
Located in a natural oasis, the Oasis At Death Valley is composed of two resorts: The historic Inn At Death Valley, which opened in 1927, and the newer Ranch At Death Valley, which recently underwent a $155 million renovation. The sprawling resort is great for those looking for both luxury and recreation—it has a golf course and two spring-fed pools—but it’s also inside Death Valley National Park, meaning you’ll be able to spend a day traipsing the park’s stunning salt flats before heading back to your room for a nice warm bath. Rooms at the Ranch start at $200 a night, while the Inn starts at $350 a night.
Sierra Nevada Resort, Mammoth Lakes, California
Another classic that’s undergone a recent remodel, the Sierra Nevada Resort was built in 1967 by onetime L.A. Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Nestled in Mammoth Lakes, California, the resort is roughly 30 minutes from Yosemite’s east Tioga Pass entrance. The Americana-themed lobby boasts pictures of past guests such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., while the guest rooms feature illustrated maps and custom ski and snowboard racks made from upcycled timber salvaged nearby after forest fires. There are 15 fireplace suites, as well as a number of chalet and cabin options for those looking for a little more privacy and space. Off-season, rooms start at $159 a night, getting just slightly more expensive during the winter months.
The Virginian Lodge, Jackson, Wyoming
Located 20 minutes from Grand Teton National Park’s Moose Entrance, the Virginian Lodge first opened 58 years ago as a respite for adventure seekers passing through town. The roadside motor lodge got a facelift in 2022 and now boasts charming mid-century design, a saloon, bunk rooms, two restaurants, and seven built-in fire pits complete with s’mores service. Rooms start at $179 a night in the low season.
Sage Lodge, Pray, Montana
Located in Montana 35 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, Sage Lodge offers everything you’d want from a swanky luxury resort. There’s a full-service spa, in-room fireplaces, and a restaurant that serves locally-sourced food. If you’re looking to rough it a bit, the hotel also offers curated outdoor expeditions including guided trips into Yellowstone National Park, horseback riding, and fly fishing. Winter rates start at $519 a night, and summer accommodations start at $855 nightly.
