Ready for your next international adventure? Naturally, you'll need to bring the appropriate documents with you, like your passport. If you plan on renting a vehicle abroad, you might also need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Unfortunately, scam websites have been popping up and claiming to sell International Driving Permits, when in fact they’re not authorized to do so. The U.S. Department of State has only authorized two organizations to issue IDPs: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). You can obtain one in person or by mail before you leave for your trip.

Here’s everything you need to know about International Driving Permits and how to avoid scams.

What is an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit is a document that allows you to legally drive in certain foreign countries. Like a driver’s license, it includes your name, driver information, and photo. The information on your IDP is written in 10 languages and is valid in more than 150 countries.

Not all countries require it, but many do. For example, you can use your state-issued driver’s license in Canada or Mexico. But once you transcend North American borders, you may need to get an International Driving Permit to legally get behind the wheel. An International Driving Permit works in tandem with your U.S. driver’s license and does not replace it. You still need to carry your U.S. driver’s license at all times while driving abroad.

What countries require an International Driving Permit?

Whether you’re planning an international road trip or you are simply renting a car to get around town, review each country’s laws before you depart. Some countries may require an International Driving Permit, while others may not.

You can find out if you need an International Driving Permit by going to the AAA IDP website. For more information, go to the embassy website of the country you’re visiting to check the country’s requirements or go to the U.S. Department of State travel website, search the country, and scroll down to the “Travel and Transportation” section.

How do you get an International Driving Permit?

International Driving Permits are only available from AAA or the AATA. There are two ways to get an IDP through AAA:

  1. Go to your local AAA branch
  2. Apply by mail

What do you need to apply for an International Driving Permit?

To get an International Driving Permit, you need:

  • To fill out the International Driving Permit application
  • Two original passport photos (These can be taken at your local AAA branch for a small fee. If you are applying by mail, both passport photos must have your signature on the back.)
  • Your current U.S. driver’s license (for mail, make a photocopy of each side)
  • To pay a $20 fee (plus sales tax or expedited shipping fees, if applicable)

It’s important to note that you must apply for an International Driving Permit before your departure date, as the document is only available from the United States. You can get a head start on your IDP application before you travel, but you must apply within six months of your desired effective date. Once issued, an IDP is valid for one year.

How much does it cost to get an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit costs $20, plus any applicable sales tax and shipping fees. Many scam websites will charge you much more and claim to process your IDP application for you.

How do you avoid IDP scams?

If you see a website (other than AAA or AATA) that claims to offer an International Driving Permit, it’s a scam. No other websites have the authority to legally issue an International Driving Permit. The only three legitimate ways to secure an IDP are to go to a local AAA branch, apply through the mail, or apply online at the AATA’s website. Any other shortcut or website is a scam.
